In February 2024, the government presented a proposal for a new unemployment insurance. In early April they submitted the proposal to the Parliament. The Government proposes that the new insurance should come into force on October 1, 2025.

According to the proposal, compensation from an unemployment insurance fund will only be based on income instead of time worked. Unemployment funds will be able to retrieve income information directly from the Swedish Tax Agency, which will hopefully make things easier for the unemployed, employers, and unemployment funds. Parliament is expected to decide on the proposal on 18 June 2024.
